Leadership is Influence: One conversation at a time

Module 1: Different approaches to influence

  • What challenges do leaders face to create a project using influence?  
  • Relate highest-stakes conversation participants have had, and how they handled it successfully. What approaches did they use?
  • Breakout sessions where each participant will endeavour to influence another on a key issue.
  • Group exercise and feedback

Module 2: Listen to the Principles of Influence

  • Listen for “What’s in It for them”;  People do things for their own reasons 
  • Find the right balance between ego, results, and relationships
  • Mindfulness for self-awareness
  • Demonstrate the behaviour that “If you don’t ask for it, you won’t get it”
  • Recognize that most influence happens one person at a time
  • Take 100% responsibility for your own impact
  • Group exercise and feedback

Module 3: Practical Steps to Influential Conversations

  • Set a clear, measurable, specific goal
  • Assess the situation
  • Choose the right appeal (different approaches for different goals) 
  • Structure the approach
  • Plan for the worst – have an exit plan If things go wrong
  • Rehearse
  • Group exercise and feedback

Module 4: Debrief and Discuss

  • What worked?
  • What did you learn?
  • If you don’t achieve your goal, what are your next steps?

Module 5: Closing

  • Review
  • Insights
  • Integrate into the day-to-day
  • Next steps
