You Have a Job to Do. It Won’t Be Easy in Our AI-Enabled VUCA World. - Bonar Institute for Purposeful Leadership

Balancing the demands of diverse groups of stakeholders is more complex than ever. AI (Artificial Intelligence) is already shifting the workplace landscape because it enables “the simulation or approximation of human intelligence in machines.”  AI empowers computers to self-learn, reason, and perceive. AI will continue to advance.  Apple and Amazon are integrating generative AI into their respective virtual assistants, Siri and Alexa. Music streaming programs that have used predictive analytics for years to personalize music recommendations for listeners are exploring the creation of AI-generated music customized to listeners’ moods and preferences. AI is transforming the value chains of several industries, such as healthcare and finance.  Predictions are that AI will continue to develop and advance quickly for at least another ten years.

Keeping up with AI in a rapidly evolving business environment, and successfully navigating new technological terrain, requires deliberate intent, an unwavering alignment of vision and strategy, and the ability to leverage purposeful leadership to deliver value to stakeholders.

Best intentions aren’t enough, as consumers’ expectations have created an environment where misalignment between vision and strategy comes with a very slim margin for error. Delivering long-term value for all stakeholders is a job for the entire organization that demands shared accountability and responsibility.

Purpose, reputation, integrity, and creating a culture of trust and transparency are the new benchmarks of an authentic organization. Profitable performance is an outcome of these key attributes. Simply put, an organization will not realize long-term success if its leaders aren’t aligned on purpose. Efforts will fail unless people have conviction across the entire organization. This requires shared responsibility and accountability to be unwavering and held to a high standard of excellence.

Most successful organizations recognize that shared purpose is what keeps them grounded and on track for long-term success.  As fast-paced AI innovations are exponentially introduced, leaders can lean into VUCA to identify the “knowns and unknowns” of advancing technology, which will require intentional action, while keeping aligned with the vision and purpose of the organization.

Leadership is at the heart of an organization’s DNA. It’s at the core of its intent, the ambition it serves and the vision to become something more than best intentions. Leadership that is aligned with how organizations act creates a foundation for sustained behaviour in the fluid environment of AI. Without such an alignment, the risks to an organization’s ability to deliver value and growth potential are significant. Effective and engaged purposeful leadership catalyzes the return on any investment.

What can you do?

Be proactive. Bonar Institute has developed a series of programs, most notably, Responsible AI for Purposeful Boards and The C-Suite, that are designed to address the functional capabilities of leadership and create a purposeful approach to establishing a foundation of value-driven engagement for all stakeholders.
